Us! We were honored tonight to receive the Grand Prize at the Videotect Awards held at the Walker Art Center. Our winning video entry was directed, filmed and edited by Zechariah Thormodsgaard and executive produced by Sarah Thormodsgaard. We teamed up with Shelter Architecture and a phenomenal cast & crew to create a video about sustainable transportation. Check it out on www.facebook.com/Gaardhouse

The winner was determined by a distinguished jury – Marianne Combs, MN Public Radio arts reporter, David Frank, Mpls transit-development director, Sheryl Mousely, Walker Art Center film and video curator and Jeffrey Scherer, FAIA, Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle principal.

Part of the awards ceremony included Viewer’s Choice top 10 videos. Finalists were chosen by online voting so thank you to everyone who voted for us and our video, “SaddleBag”!

THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SNOW BUSINESS

10 degree weather and snow. Our fantastic cast and crew bundled up and headed to Northfield to film, SaddleBag, a video about sustainable transportation for the Architecture MN Videotect competition. We had only a few short weeks of preproduction collaboration with Shelter Architecture. Cowboy Kristo Sween, Gary Loo Bun, Israel Anderson and Niki Zapolski were superb in their acting roles. Special thanks to Kurt Gough for co-producing, providing excellent craft service and an outdoor heater. Beth Holmes, our horse wrangler, kept our lovable horse and screen star, Champ, ready for his close-ups.

Our PA, Anthony Brousseau and AD, Brianna Diehl, kept us on schedule to get the shots before sundown. Ellen Apel secured us a Nice Ride bike. Big Steer, the City of Northfield and Gramp’s Corner provided shooting locations. Kevin Clemens and Tom Vandervoort were great resources and an electric car was provided by Stew Roberts, MNEAA, The Foreign Service.

Thanks team! We’ll find out the contest results on March 1 at the Walker Arts Center Screening.

POETRY IN MOTION

Beautiful… Sad… Hilarious… Stunning… Thought-provoking… So many words can describe the MOTIONPOEMS event tonight. MOTIONPOEMS is a poetry film initiative that broadens the audience for poetry by turning great contemporary poems into short films for big-screen and online distribution. Sponsored by HDMG, the auditorium was packed tonight. The poems and animations were brilliant. We loved Faith Eskola’s motion poem and Erin Belieu’s “When at a Certain Party in NYC.” Our favorites voice over artists were the hard-boiled voice of Andy Reynolds and the sweet little voice of Jersey Eskola.

TWIN CITIES FILM FEST TRAILER

Gaardhouse is working with The Pencil Project for the trailer of The Twin Cities Film Festival. (TCFF). TCFF is a non–profit arts organization centered around a major mainstream 5-day film festival. This year the exclusive venue is in St. Louis Park at the amazing ShowPlace ICON at the West End. With its state-of-the-art technology, this premiere location is a perfect fit for the festival. We’re excited to support the TCFF goal: To offer audiences’ access to the best films the global industry has to offer, to stimulate economic activity in the Twin Cities and to offer filmmakers a premiere venue at which to premiere their work.

HIDDEN KITTEN

Surprise! We heard a faint meow outside the Gaardhouse studio and looked all over the parking lot. To our surprise we found a tiny stray 6 week old kitten hidden inside Zechariah’s car, only 6″ from the drive shaft. Thanks to SIP coffee house next door! They provided us with milk and tuna fish to coax out the kitten from inside the Xterra’s undercarriage. We, of course, named him Axle and are happy to report that he has been adopted by a loving family. We will miss having a company cat but are glad he has a new home.
